Overview:
A Class B CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) driver is responsible for operating vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of over 26,000 pounds, excluding tractor-trailers. These drivers play a critical role in the transportation of goods, materials, or passengers, ensuring safety, timeliness, and regulatory compliance throughout their routes.
Key Responsibilities:
- Vehicle Operation:
Safely operate medium to heavy-duty vehicles such as straight trucks, dump trucks, delivery vehicles, and certain buses. - Transportation Duties:
Transport goods, materials, or passengers to specified locations, adhering to delivery schedules. - Loading and Unloading:
Assist with loading, securing, and unloading cargo as needed, ensuring items are handled with care. - Safety & Compliance:
Follow traffic laws, Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations, and internal company policies at all times. - Vehicle Maintenance:
Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections, report issues, and assist in basic maintenance to ensure roadworthiness. - Communication:
Maintain effective communication with dispatchers, customers, and team members to ensure smooth operations. - Record Keeping:
Accurately complete and submit delivery logs, inspection reports, and any other required documentation.
Common Industries for Class B CDL Drivers:
- Delivery Services: Residential and commercial product delivery.
- Construction: Hauling materials and operating dump trucks.
- Waste Management: Garbage and recycling truck operation.
- Public Transportation: Driving city buses, school buses, and shuttle services.
- Utility Services: Operating bucket trucks and service vehicles.
- Fuel & Oil Delivery: Transporting fuel or oil to service stations and customers.
Skills & Qualifications:
- Valid Class B CDL with necessary endorsements (e.g., passenger, air brakes, etc.)
- Clean driving record with a strong history of safe vehicle operation.
- Physical fitness, including the ability to lift heavy objects and work in various conditions.
- Basic mechanical skills for identifying vehicle issues and performing minor repairs.
- Customer service orientation and strong interpersonal skills.
- Strong navigation abilities and experience using GPS systems or maps.
- Familiarity with DOT safety and compliance regulations.
- Ability to pass drug and alcohol screenings, background checks, and physical exams.
